The housing will be delivered across three adjoining sites and comprises five social and seven affordable homes with tenants to include Indigenous Australians, older women at risk of homelessness, and women and children fleeing domestic and family violence.

The 12 new two-bedroom homes will be developed and owned by community housing provider, Venture Housing Company (Venture). Venture is contributing land and $1.5 million towards the project development costs, supported by a $1.9 million grant under the Barkly Regional Deal (Northern Territory Government $0.95 million and Australian Government $0.95 million) and an additional capital grant of $500,000 from the Northern Territory Government.

The Housing Australia funding is via the National Housing Infrastructure Facility Social and Affordable Housing (NHIF SAH).

Construction on the project is underway, with completion expected by early 2025.

Housing Australia CEO Nathan Dal Bon said, “We are very pleased to fund our first social and affordable housing project in the Northern Territory, and even more so in Tennant Creek which experiences one of the highest homelessness rates in the country.

This is a great example of how the Commonwealth is working with States and Territories and registered community housing providers to support the community housing sector to deliver homes for Indigenous Australians as well as those most vulnerable in our communities.”

Karen Walsh, CEO, Venture Housing Company said, “Venture is committed to increasing the supply of sustainable, well-designed, affordable, and quality homes by leveraging our capability and capital and partnerships with Government and the private sector.

This grant from Housing Australia has made a huge and positive difference to what can now be delivered. This is our second development in Tennant Creek and we’re excited that these homes will enable our tenants to access opportunities and achieve their aspirations.

For Venture, we’re pleased to be making a difference in peoples’ lives and contributing to social and economic impact in Tennant Creek and the NT.”
