Spotlight on Homes Victoria: Flemington
Rose and her eight children are one of hundreds of families now able to call Flemington home once more, following the completed redevelopment of the site under the Victorian Government's Ground Lease Model program.
Comprising one, two, three and four-bedroom units, the 359-unit development includes 240 social homes and 119 affordable homes, as well as community and open spaces, and car parking.
Having originally lived in Flemington from 2009, Rose and her children were relocated five years ago during the demolition and reconstruction of the site. The family of nine has now returned to a new four-bedroom apartment and neighbouring two-bedroom apartment, allowing them to stay together comfortably just five kilometres from the CBD with easy access to public transport.
Rose says Flemington has a "heartbeat" and is excited to be back in the area. With her youngest child three years old, and eldest 18 years old, the Flemington area provides them with a sense of community, opportunity to meet friends, play sport and take up new activities.
Under the Ground Lease Model, the land remains publicly owned and is leased to a not-for-profit project partner to build, operate and maintain the housing onsite for 40 years. At the end of the lease, all homes will be transferred to public ownership.
